During the night from March 25 to March 26, 1992 a Russian conscript killed eight people and wounded two others at a garrison in Kyakhta, Russia. The 20-year-old from Irkutsk, who had been in the army for less than a year, left his guard post and first killed the commanding officer, and then the commander of the guard, his deputy, and five other soldiers. All of his victims were shot in their sleep at point-blank range. After the shooting the soldier fled, armed with a pistol, a submachine gun, and large quantities of ammunition.[1][2][3][4]
