James T. Grant was an American farmer and merchant who killed his wife and six children at their farm twelve miles from Benton, Arkansas, United States on December 26, 1911.[1]

That night Grant took a heavy club made of oak wood, killed his wife while she was dressing for bed, and then smashed the skulls of his five children and his stepson, who were aged between 5 and 13 years and were already lying in their beds.

Afterwards he penned a suicide note, writing: "[O]wing to deep despair and that I see nothing for me or my children, who, I believe, would be better off in heaven, I commit this act." and finally hanged himself in the barn. The bodies were discovered the next day by his 16-year-old son Hugh when he returned from a Christmas celebration at a neighbour.[2][3][4][5]
