Jörg Rösthell was a German butcher who killed his wife and six children in Breslau (given as Prüsseln in the sources), Holy Roman Empire on April 11, 1599. Rösthell apparently spent his entire money drinking and feasting at an inn, which was the cause of frequent quarrels with his wife. On the aforementioned date he murdered her with a butcher knife, before doing the same with his children.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7]

The only available source for the incident is a popular print published in Pilsen in 1599, so the truth of the story is at least disputable.

Popular printEdit

Parts of the popular print read as follows:

"Ach du Hertz lieber Vatter mein/
was hast du dich geziegen;"
(...)
"ach Vatter laß mich leben/
jhr solt mir weder Essen noch trincken/
Kein Brodt in die Schul mehr geben./
Das namb er gar zu Hertzen nicht/
der Ehr vergessen Bößewicht/
gar nichts gieng jhm zu Hertzen."
