Franz Capek (also identified as Franz Tschapek) was an Austrian pensioner who killed his wife, four daughters, and two sons with an axe in Waltersdorf, Austria on October 7, 1956, before hanging himself. The bodies of the children, who were aged 18 months to 14 years, were found by police in a heap of straw near a forest, while the bodies of Capek and his wife were discovered in their apartment.[1][2][3]

The family was reportedly broken, with Capek's wife being an alcoholic who was scheduled to appear in a rehabilitation center the same week. Due to his wife's alcoholism and Capek's low pension, which amounted to only 1900 Austrian schilling a month, a court had ordered to put the children in an orphanage.[4][5][6][7]

VictimsEdit

Among those killed were:

  • Hilde/Marie Capek, 44/39, his wife
  • Elfriede/Grethel Capek, 14, his daughter
  • Josef Capek, 12, his son
