Title A Case Analysis of University Shootings
Published in ASC Annual Meeting, St. Louis Adam's Mark, St. Louis, Missouri, Nov. 12, 2008
Abstract Previous research on school violence has primarily focused on incidents occurring at elementary and secondary education locations. Despite the number of shootings that have occurred on college and university campuses, little research has been conducted which address the common themes of these shootings. Using a case analysis and cross-national comparative analysis methodology, this paper describes the details of the incidents, community/school settings, background of offenders, possible predictors, the planning involved, and other background factors of six university shootings which occurred in the United States and Canada over a forty year period. Findings of the research will address theoretical explanations of the psychological, sociological, and cultural factors associated with these incidents. Suggestions for future research and policy implications are presented.
